Romain CORBISIER  

Romain Corbisier is a French composer, conductor and teacher. While he began his musical studies with two instruments, the trumpet and the piano, he turned very fast to composition. He wrote his first sketches during his adolescence, and it is his music theory teacher, Josée Delgrange-Lepez, who discovered at first his talent. She encouraged him to continue his musical studies through the study of harmony and counterpoint. He entered the class of Christian Bellegarde at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Lille, France. Then, he went to Brussels to study the composition with Daniel Capelletti (Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles, Belgium). With him, he built his musical personality and showed a taste for an effective orchestration and instrumentation. At the same time, Romain Corbisier started to study the conducting in Lille with Jean-Sébastien Béreau whose lessons were of an inestimable value. In 2015, he entered ARTS² - Conservatoire royal de Mons, Belgium, to do two Master’s degrees: one in conducting (with Daniel Gazon), and the other in “écritures classiques” with Jean-Pierre Deleuze, a renowned composer and teacher

Romain Corbisier’s music has been recognized at the international level with many concerts and premieres in Europe (France, Belgium, Germany, Portugal and Croatia), and many distinctions at some international contests (“Special Prize” at the International Antonín Dvořák Composition Competition, finalist at the “5-minute opera” contest, “Maurice Ravel” contest…). His piece A Blind War (11/13/15), op. 16 (original title: Une guerre aveugle (13/11/15), op. 16) has been selected by the American label Ablaze Records to feature on their CD “Orchestral Masters vol. 5” (2018). This recording has been made possible by the financial support of many contributors.

His pieces cover a large range that goes from chamber music to symphonic music and from sacred music to opera for children. In his major pieces, there are: Twilight, op. 3 (original title: Crépuscule, op. 3), Trio “Epic Adventure in three acts” for flute, cello and piano, op. 4a, Journey To Abyss, op. 8 (original title: Course à l’abîme, op. 8) (for orchestra), A Blind War (11/13/15), op. 16 (original title: Une guerre aveugle (13/11/15), op. 16) (composed after the terrorist attacks that occurred on 13^th November, 2015), his Ave Maria, op. 11, Temptation, op. 13 (original title: Tentation, op. 13) (flash opera), and The Super-Heroes, op. 14 (original title: Les Super-Héros, op. 14) (opera for children).

Romain Corbisier also scored the original soundtrack of La Naissance de Narcisse (2018), Eva K. (2019), and Le Somnambule (2022), movies by Hugo Parthonnaud.

He defines his music as “being at the boundaries of the musical languages”. We can find in his pieces tonal/modal colors, but also atonal and spectral harmonies. This gives him a large range of possibilities. He also likes to write expressive themes in his pieces. Many of his compositions have an extra-musical stimulus (mythology, painting, topicality…). When he composes, he always tries to express the emotions in the most direct and effective way.

During his conducting studies, Romain Corbisier had the opportunity to work with many great conductors among Jorma Panula, Jean-Sébastien Béreau, Alexandre Bloch, Laurent Goossaert, Daniel Gazon, Robertas Šervenikas, Jordi Mora, Jörg Birhance and Konrad von Abel, who teached him the musical phenomenology as maestro Sergiu Celibidache developed it. While his repertoire goes from classical to contemporary music, he prefers to conduct the music of his time. He conducted the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra, the Søderjyllands Symfoniorkester, the Orchestre du Conservatoire de Mons, the string orchestra Arcangelo, and the Orchestra of the summer academy of Leiria, and in many great venues such as the Grande Salle (Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles, Belgium), the Studio Haas-Teichen (Musical Chapel Queen Elizabeth, Belgium), the Kuopion Musiikkikeskus, the Alsion Concert Hall, and the Capelas Imperfeitas do Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória (Batalha, Potugal). He is the Musical Director of the Namur Symphonic Orchestra, Belgium.

Romain Corbisier is professor of classical composition and orchestration at IMEP (Institut royal supérieur de musique et de pédagogie) in Namur, Belgium.
